General - Game Specific Questions

What is FLIGBY, the Official Flow Program?

The FLIGBY serious game concept was developed by ALEAS Simulations Inc. in close collaboration with Professor Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi (Distinguished Professor of Psychology and Management at Claremont Graduate University), the psychologist behind the "positive psychology" movement, and is the Official Flow Program for decision makers. FLIGBY is an online simulation based on Csikszentmihalyi's book "Flow is Good Business" (FLIGBY). Players are both tested and guided on a path towards optimal leadership development, in a Flow inducing corporate culture.

The LeadWell V-Tool is an add-on built on the FLIGBY platform and harnesses all aspects of the original game, including Flow-Leadership, and has added a strategic and detailed assessment that provides deeper insight into a player's ability to make optimal empathetic, tolerant choices, and identify & address inappropriate, bullying and harassing behaviour.

What is LeadWell?

LeadWell V-ToolTM is an add-on that is built on and harnesses the power of the original Csikszentmihalyi's award-winning serious game, FLIGBY, and was conceived by ReWhyr Inc. in order to additionally address the serious and pervasive challenge of employee disengagement, and toxic and dysfunctional workplaces.

This version of FLIGBY, with its enhanced features and capacities examines inappropriate behaviour, including lack of respect, tolerance, bullying and harassment and means of redress. While these new elements are particularly germane to the North American market, they are also applicable globally. Players receive a LeadWell Assessment, which includes the LeadWell Index (developed with the Mental Health Commission of Canada) and Bonus Conduct Challenge, both of which evaluate a player's ability to make optimal empathetic, tolerant choices, and identify & address inappropriate, bullying & harassing behaviour

Where does the FLIGBY Leadership Competencies Index come from?

The 29 key leadership competencies in the FLIGBY Leadership Competencies Index™ were identified and defined by experts, and based on a composite of current theoretical and empirical descriptions of skills required for good leadership, including four specific skills needed to foster Flow within an organization. This index was scientifically built and tested to achieve an accurate, fact-based assessment of a player’s actual competencies, and can be easily adapted to any organization’s own competency system, and customized with sub-indices to focus on priority areas.

The FLIGBY Leadership Competencies Index™ is also comparable with Gallup Strengthfinder’s skills/talents which are classified into four broad themes 1) Strategic; 2) Executing; 3) Relationships; 4) Influencing. When FLIGBY competencies are classified into the same four broad categories as Strengthsfinder’s, they reveal a high correlation between the FLIGBY Index and Strengthfinder, along with a strong association in the relative weighting of the four categories.

The main difference is that FLIGBY’s Index also includes an additional four leadership competencies that specifically address Flow-based decision-making. Additionally, the FLIGBY data engine provides robust real time data on actual simulated work situations, which Strengthfinder does not.

The FLIGBY Index has proven resilient and to date has been adapted to harmonize with several other additional competency systems, including the US Executive Core Qualifications (ECQ) system, the Canadian Key Leadership Competency Profile, and many major international organizations’ internal competency systems.

Do these V-Tools have to be played as part of a blended learning process?

Individuals and/or teams can play and benefit from the inaugural Diagnostic Flow & LeadWell Reports, however, the most productive and rewarding approach is by playing it as part of a learning process. A blended learning solution integrates these V-Tools with related online and/or onsite training (workshops, coaching programs, etc.).

Our blended solutions are provided through a highly qualified network of consulting partners, who have been certified by ReWhyr Inc.

Game licenses are available for up to 180 days allowing for an initial gameplay and diagnostic assessment of leadership competencies including the ability to foster wellness in the workplace, and then replay to experiment with “what if” situations and test for growth and progress.

General Questions

Why are V-Tools referred to as serious games, simulations and/or edugames?

A Serious Game is an application with a primary purpose other than pure entertainment. What sets these applications apart from traditional video games is their focus on problem solving as well as specific and intentional learning outcomes to achieve serious, measurable, sustained changes in performance and behaviour. A Serious Game usually has the look and feel of a video game, but is actually a simulation of real-world events and processes, and is sometimes also referred to as an edugame.

What is Flow?

Flow, also known as “the zone”, is a mental state in which a person performing an activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and enjoyment.

One prerequisite of experiencing Flow is a good match between a person’s skill level and the difficulty of the challenge he or she is trying to meet.

Tasks too easy result in boredom; too difficult lead to anxiety. The challenge for managers is to find their employees’ equilibrium.

Why leverage a Virtual Leadership Training Tool?

V-Tools:

  • provide inexpensive, real-time feedback
  • allow managers to deeply engage with ideas by incorporating interactivity
  • allow structured analysis of an executive’s behaviour
  • allow different scenarios to be tested
  • can be rolled out easily to many managers

What is Psychometrics and why is it important?

Psychometrics is the science that focuses on statistical measurement of psychological states. Psychometric instruments measure knowledge, abilities, skills, attitudes, and personality traits. The most effective knowledge transfer products in the current market are the new Assessment and Evaluation serious games based which are based on psychometrics. FLIGBY + LeadWell operate on a sophisticated psychometric leadership-profiling platform that analyses & benchmarks 29 key leadership competencies that support employee engagement while balancing true-to-life triple bottom line pressures.

Gameplay Questions

How long does it take to play?

To date, many thousands of individuals have played, and the time ranges from 4 to 7.5 hours. The speed varies depending on how focused a player is, how deeply they delve into the issues, and how extensively they make use of the Media Library.

How is my performance scored?

  • Players receive a score on each of the 29 key competencies out of 100, and on each competency they are ranked in relation to the general playing population, and/or players from a particular industry sector who have completed play. Scores are automatically generated at the end of gameplay. The continuous recording of every stroke of every player, as well as the complex statistical analysis of the results, are done routinely in the automated and pre-programmed algorithm embedded in FLIGBY’s sophisticated Master-Analytics-Profiler (MAP).

  • Players are also evaluated on their ability to successfully balance a triple bottom line: Flow (social interactions), profit and environmental sustainability. There is no precise formula for achieving this balance; various combinations of decisions can lead to good results.

  • Additionally the enhanced version provides players with a strategic and detailed LeadWell Assessment that evaluates their empathy and tolerance orientation in the workplace, along with ability to identify and address inappropriate behaviour, including bullying and harassment.

What do I receive post gameplay?

All players receive a diagnostic Flow-Leadership Report, which is a personal performance profile produced in real time and is based on 29 key leadership competencies.

  • The first part of the Profile summarizes the main messages and key values of the FLIGBY Simulation.
  • The second part of the Report lists the “key performance indicators” (KPIs) and the virtual characters’ subjective feedback on the Player’s performance.
  • The third part of the Report is an unbiased analysis of the Player’s 29 Flow-Leadership Skills. The skill measurement is based on those key managerial decisions that the Player made throughout the Game.
  • The last part gives more details and explanations about the Game: additional KPIs, and Mr. Fligby’s subjective opinion about the Player’s leadership practice

The enhanced version provides players with an additional and unique LeadWell Assessment, which includes the LeadWell Index (developed with the Mental Health Commission of Canada) and Bonus Conduct Challenge. This new and innovative assessment provides a deeper dive into the player’s ability to make optimal empathetic, tolerant choices, and identify and address inappropriate, bullying and harassing behaviour.

Can I play it as part of a group/team?

Yes, you can play as part of group, with multiple players participating at the same time, but each person plays their own game and receives their own Diagnostics package. Groups that play together can also receive a team assessment that is an aggregate of scores of the group of players. This is highly useful to organizations that are strategically looking at their management cadre to: identify talent strength, gaps, needs; address individual and/or team training and development; and/or trigger dialogue on corporate workplace priorities and then drive sustainable change.

Helpful hints for playing the game?

• Set aside time to play the game! The best strategy is to spend concentrated periods of time on a few occasions, and try to stop at the end of a scene; however, the system records where you stopped, so you will start in that same spot.

• Avoid multitasking – these games are real-life simulations, requiring strong focus. It is easy to forget earlier details that may become important later on. Without appropriate attention, you can be misled more easily by some of the characters that are motivated to get what they want.

• Please note also that once you have been prompted for a decision in a scene, the preceding video segment cannot be replayed. If you need a short break, pause the video segment or the game. Note that after about 10 minutes of inactivity, you will be logged out. Afterwards, you can login again and you will be automatically at the place where you stopped before.
